When my parents died, I inheirted their libraries.  One set of 28 books were from The Modern Library series.  The series was created in 1917 with the intent to provide American readers with inexpensive reprints of what were considered important European titles and a few contemporary American books.  The books were issued in compact, hard-cover with a textured cloth in two-tone finish and without dust jackets. (There are different color schemes but I've never figured out if there is a signficance to the color combinations.)  The series adopted a running torchbearer as its logo.  The Modern Library was sold in 1927 to a new publisher, Random House, lead by editor Bennett Cerf. Random House added more titles over time billing tself as “The Modern Library of the World’s Best Books” but kept its mission the same.  The series, published thorough the 1930s, reached some 280 titles and covered authors from Aristotle to Zola.   I recall seei...

Shredding the Past: Letters, Memory, and Other Dangerous Activities

In the film Metropolitan , there’s an exchange that has always struck me as both funny and devastating. Tom Townsend, earnest and slightly wounded, asks his high school love interest, Serena Slocum about their correspondence: Tom: “You threw away all the letters I wrote you?” Serena: “I throw away nearly everything. I don’t want to go through the rest of my life with the mail I got when I was sixteen.” Tom: “I’m surprised. Someone goes through the trouble of writing a real letter—I save it. People don’t write many personal letters anymore.” Tom, the archivist; Serena, the minimalist; and the rest of us floating somewhere between keeping just enough paper to feel sentimental, but not enough to require zoning permits for storage. I thought of that scene while sitting beside the shredder in our basement office that sounded increasingly triumphant with each page it devoured. BIRD CLOCK

My sleep is all wrong even my dog can tell when I walk her in the neighborhood twilight she hurries me past the houses and the birds hidden in the trees trading their evening songs. My dreams don't flow except when I'm awake and I see them as shadows on the lawns. I slept too long to have a nap but not enough for a night's sleep and now it is near dark it was the birds outside hidden in the trees that woke me confused I did not hear their morning songs. I wonder what will it take to fix my sleep Maybe I need to tell time by the birds.
