The Beauty of Trees and Books

There are many reasons to buy a book -- the subject matter, you like the author, acquire knowledge, or entertainment. I bought this book, 
Trees of North America, purely for its beautiful aesthetic value. I love the strong colors of the cover. The pleasure of this book is due to small size (5.5" x 3.5"), beautiful illustrations accompanied by, short descriptions of over 90 trees. The book is over 90 years old, (1934) but looks almost new. Reading it, I learned there are 13 species of pine trees, and 12 of oak and a tree I’ve never heard of but love the name--the Kentucky coffee tree. A book to keep and enjoy.

When my parents died, I inheirted their libraries.  One set of 28 books were from The Modern Library series.  The series was created in 1917 with the intent to provide American readers with inexpensive reprints of what were considered important European titles and a few contemporary American books.  The books were issued in compact, hard-cover with a textured cloth in two-tone finish and without dust jackets. (There are different color schemes but I've never figured out if there is a signficance to the color combinations.)  The series adopted a running torchbearer as its logo.  The Modern Library was sold in 1927 to a new publisher, Random House, lead by editor Bennett Cerf. Thanksgiving Traveler

  Thanksgiving Traveler Some souls travel as radio and TV forecasters warn of heavy rain in the Pacific Northwest and snow in the higher elevations. Some souls at home search  for family recipes from the comfort of a messy kitchen while outside their window, oak trees shake in the same gusty winds that bring icy conditions to the upper Midwest. What is it about Thanksgiving where there is a certain ritual rejoicing about travel, traffic, and bad weather? We celebrate the sacrament as pilgrim and host. Every traveler is on a hero's journey a shared struggle from the Mayflower to the driveway arrival where we sit down together hold hands and say a blessing.
