A Man of Contradictions
He burned down the Library
but kept all the knowledge.
He hated the artist
but loved the art.
Miracles
Seeing the glow of full moon
for the first time
must feel as if a miracle has occurred.
But waking up on a random Tuesday at 63
and seeing the light of the early morning
push through the bedroom shades
can also feel like such a miracle
It Made Sense at 11:30 at night
Poetry is ancient.
It’s always been that way.
How else would Homer think of it
when he recited the Iliad or the Odyssey
before the invention of writing.
I can’t imagine poetry being a fad
in those pre-writing days
even the old ones
couldn't remember when it started.
Meteorological Message
The wind shifts
without anyone noticing
but the first to sense a change
in nature’s mood
will be the sailors and farmers among us
like animals that know when a storm is coming
stick close to them when you feel a breeze.
The Past is Happening
If you want a past
you better do something about it now.
If you sit around and watch screens,
you don’t really have a past
at least one you’ll remember
or anyone else will.
Get out there and make a mess
of life
there’s people to love
places to travel
and get lost.
And when you’re lost
you’ll remember it.
Inspiration from Brian Wilson’s Heroes and Villains
I fell in love with an innocent girl
from the Spanish Inquisition.
We took the train
to the next continent
and everywhere we found
civil unrest
not a bit of rest
or even an armrest.
I took her back
to her Iberian home
on an ocean cliff
and went on living
in the next Age.
The Sacred
Before you know my name
you hear my voice.
You may not know it
but it’s the most sacred thing
I can give you.
Spirit of Place
Who says spirits don’t inhabit a place
has not wandered through an abandoned amusement park,
cemetery on a hill,
an empty college campus in summer
or a historic battlefield
Even an abandoned house
that’s been lived in
It’s forever occupied
with the people gone
you that place is inhabited still.
